Motivational Minute (12_97)

Quote of the day:

“Books were my pass to personal freedom. I learned to read at age three, and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi.” -- Oprah Winfrey

Consider:

There’s not a single person on earth who can’t benefit from learning something new. It’s those who acknowledge this, who step out of the boundaries of what they know and what are comfortable with, and who stretch themselves and determine to learn new things--these are the ones who make a difference in the world. They aren’t satisfied with sitting back and observing, but are looking for new worlds to conquer—and conquer they do!

What new books are you reading or new things are you learning?

Wishing you all the best,

Coach Dana

Motivational Minute (12_96)

Quote of the day:

“The universe will reward you for taking risks on its behalf.” -- Shakti Gawain

Consider:

Trying something new and taking risks can be scary. But the minute you determine to step out to do something new the universe is ready to help you and to go to work on your behalf. That includes things like sending someone your way who can help you, or guiding you to helpful books to read on the subject, or helping you to decide on the best course of action to take.

How do you think the great inventors came up with their new machinery, formulas, and solutions to problems? By thinking about how to improve things, by experimentation, by trying new ideas, and by having the guts to do things differently then they had been done before.

Try changing something that you have wanted to change for a long time. Do something different and see what new opportunities open up to you.

Wishing you all the best,

Coach Dana

Motivational Minute (12_95)

Quote of the day:

Beauty is God's handwriting. -- Anne Louise Flint

Consider:

If you keep your eyes open for the positive and beauty of your surroundings you will find it.

Here’s an illustration that reflects the principle of the quote.

A young man who was an amateur artist, but who had to spend most of his time living and working in a city, often resented his drab surroundings and longed for the freedom and beauty of the countryside.

One day, as he walked down a narrow alley, a gleam of sunlight burst through a gap in the buildings, illuminating a tiny, dirty, but golden-haired, child playing with a doll on a doorstep. Here was a picture indeed! In that moment he made a resolution: every day on the way to work he would try to find at least one subject for a picture.

To his amazement, what had formerly seemed dull and unattractive streets became alive with "pictures"--children playing, clothes on a line fluttering in the breeze, a pot of flowers on a window-sill, some antique railings casting a shadow in the sunlight--the inspiration was endless.

You may not be a budding artists, but the principle still holds true. Take time to look for the good and beauty in the commonplace and you will find it. The more you live in the moment in a positive state of mind the more joy you will find and the happier you will be.

Motivational Minute (12_94)

Quote of the day:

“The man who graduates today and stops learning tomorrow is uneducated the day after.” -- Newton D. Baker

Consider:

Your soul is like a furnace that needs fuel to keep burning brightly, and stepping out to learn, is fuel for that furnace. The process of learning helps to keep your spirit alive and moving forward. Learning is exciting for your spirit. It’s energizing. It creates vitality.

When you make the effort to learn something new, your spirit grows and expands, whether your attempts at the new are successful or not. That’s because you’ve made the decision to have an open mind to receive the new.

What new thing are you learning?

Wishing you all the best,

Coach Dana

Motivational Minute (12_93)

Quote of the day:

"I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day, I'd rather one would walk with me than merely show the way." -- Edgar A. Guest

Consider:

This quote reminds me of a personal story. When I was just starting off in my career one of the veteran workers came up to me and asked me for something. I promptly began to explain to him where to find it, at which time he recited to me the above quote. It so convicted me that I immediately stopped what I was doing and showed him where he could find what he was looking for.

That one incident so impressed me that since that time whenever someone asks me for help I try to not only explain it, but actually show them the way or how to do it.

This simple act of kindness has served me well for many years, and will do the same for you.

Wishing you all the best,

Motivational Minute (12_92)

Quote of the day:

“If you look for the bad in people expecting to find it, you surely will.” – Abraham Lincoln

Consider:

I agree with Mr. Lincoln, but I would rather take the more positive stance of that quote. If you look for the good in people expecting to find it, you surely will.

It’s like the story told about Socrates.

Socrates was sitting outside of the gates of Athens when a man came up to him and said, ‘I am thinking about moving into Athens. Can you please tell me what it is like to live here?’ Socrates replied, ‘I would be happy to tell you, but first would you please tell me what it was like in your previous home city?’ The man quickly roared, ‘Oh, it was awful. The people stab you in the back and rob you blind. I am not leaving any friends, only enemies.’ Socrates frowned and sadly continued, ‘Well, you best be on your way because you will find the same thing here in Athens.’

A little while later another man stopped to speak to Socrates and inquired, ‘I was considering moving here to Athens. Can you tell me what it is like to live here?’ Socrates again replied, ‘I would be happy to tell you, but first would you please tell me what it was like in your previous home city?’ The man smiled and said, ‘Where I come from the people all work together and help each other. Kindness is everywhere and you are never treated with anything but the utmost respect.’ ‘Welcome to Athens,’ smiled Socrates,‘ You will find the same thing here.’

If we look for the bad in things, places or people we will find it, however, if we look for the good in every situation, we will find that too.

No one is perfect. We all have our imperfections. Let's try to overlook them in each other. Always look for the good in people, and they will surely live up to it.

Wishing you all the best,

Coach Dana

Motivational Minute (12_91)

Quote of the day:

“Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.” -- Pope John XXIII

Consider:

We've all seen cartoons that portray a person at a point of decision with a guardian angel on one shoulder, and a little devil on the other, each trying to persuade the person to do or not do this or that. The message is simple, clear, and often amusing, but what we sometimes fail to realize is that there is also an element of truth in these caricatures.

In the coaching world the little devil trying to persuade you to “not do this or that” is referred to as your limiting beliefs, or negative self chatter. We all have these two voices trying to influence us: one encourages us to do good, to be encouraged, to affirm our self-worth, and the other is constantly trying to pull us down.

Think of your mind as a radio. There are many stations broadcasting—sending waves out in space. Good broadcasts inspire faith, hope, love, wisdom, truth, instruction, and other positive thoughts that inspire positive actions. But other stations may dwell on the negative and send out broadcasts that deliberately flood the airwaves with lies, propaganda and time-wasters—anything to occupy your mind and distract you from receiving the good and the positive.

You can choose which station to tune into. You control the radio of your mind. Which broadcast [voice] are you tuned in to? Which one guides your thoughts and thereby controls your time and actions?

Wishing you all the best,

Coach Dana
